Dieter Baumann (born February 9, 1965 in Blaustein ) is a former German athlete and Olympic champion. He is one of the most successful long-distance runners in German sports history. At national level alone, he was able to win 40 championship titles on distances from 1500 meters to 10,000 meters and in cross-country running. His best performance over 5000 meters on August 13, 1997 in Zurich (then a European record ) is still the fastest time of a runner of non-African descent over this distance.

Career

Dieter Baumann, who belonged to the Bundeswehr Sports Promotion Group in Böblingen between 1985 and 1989, initially started for the sports club LG Alb Donau (1982–1986), later for VfL Waiblingen (1987–1990) and TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1990–2000) . Since 2001 he started for the LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen , whose first chairman he was from March 2004 to 2007. With a height of 1.78 m, he had a competition weight of 62 kg.

In the 5000 meter run , his special course, he won two Olympic medals: at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he won silver, at the 1992 Games in Barcelona he won after a sprint final in which he finished the last 100 meters in 11, Covered 9 s, the gold medal. In the year of his Olympic victory, he was also voted athlete of the year (ahead of Paul Meier and Stephan Freilang ) and athlete of the year . This was followed by a victory at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994 over 5000 meters, a second place at the European Championships in 1998 in Budapest over 10,000 meters and the victory in the 1998 World Cup over 3000 meters.

Dieter Baumann was always trained by his wife Isabelle (née Hozang). The couple have a daughter, former 400-meter hurdler Jackie Baumann , and their son Robert Baumann.

Doping ban 2000

In a doping control on October 19, 1999 and a control sample on November 12, Baumann tested positive for the active ingredient nandrolone . At the hearing before the German Athletics Association , he was acquitted of the allegation of doping on July 13, 2000 due to the findings of norandrostendione in his toothpaste (therefore this case is often referred to as the “toothpaste affair”) and submitted hair samples without any findings. However, the IAAF did not recognize this acquittal by the national federation, suspended him on September 18, 2000 until January 21, 2002 and retroactively revoked his national title over 5000 m. To this day, Baumann denies that he knowingly took the funds.

In 2004, the director Diethard Klante processed the events surrounding the doping scandal in a television film: I want to walk! The Dieter Baumann case .

The molecular biologist and doping critic Werner Franke explained in an interview to the magazine Der Spiegel in 2006 that he considered the findings to be an attack and that Baumann was innocent:

“Baumann was very committed to the fight against doping. His toothpaste tubes were contaminated, which has been proven to be an old Stasi method. Baumann let too many people touch him. "

End of career in 2003

After the suspension he took part in competitions again. He failed to switch to the marathon route when he broke in after 30 kilometers at the Hamburg Marathon in April 2002 and gave up the race. At the European Championships in Munich , he again took second place over 10,000 meters. In 2003 he won his third national title over 10,000 meters and his eleventh over 5000 meters. However, as it became more and more difficult for him to perform as usual with increasing age, he ended his competitive sports career on September 8, 2003 after 22 years.

On October 28, 2007, he finished a marathon for the first time in Frankfurt . With the time of 2:30:00 h he was fourth fastest German. Sponsors had offered 1,000 euros for every minute under three hours. Further donation campaigns raised a total of 40,000 euros, which will be used for the renovation of the Tübingen stadium and the promotion of young runners in Hesse and Württemberg. In 2011 he started at the 100 km from Biel and came in 98th place in 9:45:57 h.

Baumann was active as a trainer until 2011, including for Arne Gabius .

Dieter Baumann sports hall in Blaubeuren

As part of the Freiburg Marathon 2009 he presented his cabaret program “Körner - Currywurst - Kenya. A relaxed, easy evening about running, life, burden and lust ”. Further cabaret programs followed. In 2012 Baumann performed a theater version of Siegfried Lenz 's novel Bread and Games . In the adaptation he wrote himself, he played five different roles. The satirical magazine Titanic praised the appearances as "quick-witted" and "well prepared": "Dieter Baumann is never on stage ... outside his element, and that is more than you can say about so much on German cabaret stages".

In cooperation with Andreas Dietrich and students from the Institute for Sports Science and an event agency, Baumann has been co-organizer of the traditional Tübingen City Run (now the Tübinger Erbe-Lauf ).

The sports hall in Blaubeuren , a long-time residence and neighboring town of his birthplace Blaustein, is named after him.
