final

Date: August 8, 1992

Sixteen athletes contested the final: three Kenyans, two Ethiopians, two Moroccans and one runner each from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Tanzania, the USA and Great Britain.

The initial situation suggested a fight between the German Dieter Baumann, Olympic runner-up in 1988, and the top runners from Africa. These included the Kenyan world champion Yobes Ondieki, vice world champion Fita Bayisa from Ethiopia and the Moroccan Brahim Boutayeb. In the races of the Olympic season before these games, Baumann had defeated several of the top African athletes. However, these were not speed runs, Baumann had been able to use his enormous sprint force and the question was whether he would still be able to do this in a fast race that the Africans would force on him, because the best times of the Africans were up to ten Seconds under Baumann's best performance.

In the final everything went differently than expected. First the Kenyan Dominic Kirui started the leadership work, but was replaced after a good two kilometers. Surprisingly, the Africans did not unconditionally bet on the tempo card from the start. It was run very quickly, but that was entirely within Baumann's ability. At 3000 meters, a six-man top group formed consisting of five Africans - Bayisa, Worku Bikila from Ethiopia, Paul Bitok from Kenya, Boutayeb and Ondieki - and Baumann as the only European. On the last lap, for which Baumann had actually announced a long sprint from the front, he got into trouble on the back straight. He was in the middle of the crowd, the way to the front would only have been possible with a lot of effort, past the runners in front of him. Bitok led ahead of Bayisa, Boutayeb, Baumann and Ondieki. In the last corner the race got faster and faster, Boutayeb attacked the two leaders on the outside but couldn't get past. Behind it Baumann was walking on the inside lane and was pretty stuck when it came to the home straight. There was hardly any space to get to the very front. Bitok even settled a bit. But then Bayisa cleared the inside lane and Baumann decided to take this chance. He stormed past Boutayeb and Bayisa and had enough reserves to catch Bitok as well. Dieter Baumann was Olympic champion ahead of Paul Bitok and Fita Bayisa. He ran the last 100 meters in 11.9 seconds. Brahim Boutayeb remained fourth. Yobes Ondieki and Worku Bikila were well behind in fifth and sixth.

Dieter Baumann won the first German Olympic victory over 5000 meters for men.
