For the finals on August 6th, two Americans and two French had qualified. There was also one starter each from Jamaica, Sweden, Great Britain and the United Team.
The real favorite, the reigning world champion Samuel Matete from Zambia, was disqualified in the semifinals. The favorite was the US runner Kevin Young, who was fourth at the last World Championships. But he had improved a lot. His main competitors were Vice World Champion Winthrop Graham from Jamaica and the British World Cup third-placed Kriss Akabusi.
Young approached the final quickly. He took the lead and steadily increased his lead over second-placed Graham. By the time it hit the home stretch, Young was already well ahead. Graham was also well ahead of the rest of the field. First Akabusi and the French Stéphane Diagana, who was just behind him, fought for bronze. Kevin Young knocked over the last hurdle, but that didn't change the fact that he became Olympic champion at 46.78 seconds and was the first - and to date (February 2018) only - athlete to stay under 47 seconds. Winthrop Graham finished second, 88 hundredths of a second behind, and Kriss Akabusi clearly prevailed in the duel for the bronze medal. Behind Stéphane Diagana, Swede Niklas Wallenlind was fifth ahead of Oleh Twerdochleb, who started for the United Team.
In the twentieth Olympic 400 meter hurdles final , Kevin Young won the fifteenth gold medal for the USA, the third in a row.
Winthrop Graham won the first Jamaican medal in this discipline.
