Date: August 8, 1992

There were several line-up changes in the final race on August 8th:

The top favorite was the US relay, with Steve Lewis and Quincy Watts, the Olympic champions of the 400-meter individual run from 1988 and 1992 in their ranks. For the US team, it was also about maybe improving the world record set by its compatriots in 1968 and 1988.

After the first change, the US team was way ahead of all other seasons. Andrew Valmon had run out a large margin. Behind them, Great Britain, Cuba and Kenya battled for second place as the runners sorted their way onto the inside lane. Shortly before the next corner, the Kenyan Abednego Matilu sheared to the outside, slowed his steps and was obviously injured. Now the British and Cubans were well ahead of the rest of the field and well behind leading Quincy Watts. That didn't change in the third round either. The Cuban Norberto Téllez attacked his British opponent Kriss Akabusi several times, but could not get past him. So it went in the order USA before Great Britain, Cuba and the other teams in the final round. For the US season it was all about the world record, the Olympic victory was no longer in question, the lead was too big. Immediately after the last change, the Cuban Roberto Hernández overtook the British John Regis in the battle for silver. The US team finally won with a lead of almost forty meters in a new world record time of 2: 55.74 minutes. The British runner tried again on the home stretch, but Hernández fended off the attack. So there was silver for Cuba and bronze for Great Britain. Behind them, Brazil had now set itself apart from the other seasons and came in fourth. Nigeria came in fifth, ahead of Italy and Trinidad and Tobago.

In the eighteenth Olympic final, the USA won the thirteenth gold medal.

Cuba won a medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay for the first time .
