The US relay was also the big favorite over 4 x 400 meters . Like over 4 x 100 meters , the team did not start with the best cast. However, they 'only' did without the 400-meter Olympic-wide Ben Eastman and still could not be defeated. There was a new world record in the run-up . In the final, Walter Klinger was replaced by Bill Carr. With 3: 08.2 min, the world record was improved by another 3.5 seconds. The British relay took second place ahead of Canada, Germany came fourth.
The United States won the 4 x 400 meter relay for the third time in a row. It was also the fourth US victory in the fifth Olympic final.
