Ray Lewis (athlete)
Ray Lewis (actually Raymond Gray Lewis; born October 8, 1910 in Hamilton , Ontario ; † November 15, 2003 ibid) was a Canadian sprinter . He was the first Afro-Canadian to win a medal in the Olympics .
Lewis was a member of the Canadian team that won the bronze medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . He reached the quarter-finals over 400 m .
Two years later he was eliminated from the British Empire Games in London over 440 yards in the semi-finals and won silver with the Canadian 4 x 440 yards relay.
He set his personal best over 440 yards of 48.5 s in 1934.
In 1938 Lewis ended his sporting career and worked until 1952 as a porter for the Canadian Canadian Pacific Railway . He died on November 15, 2003 at the age of 93 in a hospital in his hometown of the aftermath of a fall he had suffered four weeks earlier.
