Ivan Fuqua

Ivan Fuqua (born August 9, 1909 in Decatur , Illinois , † January 14, 1994 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) was an American sprinter who was successful in the 400-meter run in the early 1930s .

Starting for the University of Indiana , Fuqua won the Big 10 (Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives) championships four times :

  • 220 yds. 1933 in 21.5 s and 1934 in 21.7 s
  • 440 yds. 1933 in 48.6 s 1934 in 47.8 s

At the Student World Games in Turin in 1933 , he won the gold medal in 47.8 seconds ahead of the two Germans Harry Voigt and Adolf Metzner .

Fuqua won the AAU championship twice over 440 yds .:

  • 1933 (47.7 s)
  • 1934 (47.4 s)

In 1935 he placed second. In the Olympic year 1932 he was only fifth, and since the championships were also considered eliminations for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he was only nominated for the season, which was made up of Fuqua, Edgar Ablowich , Karl Warner and Bill Carr and himself took the gold medal in the world record time of 3: 08.2 min with a large margin ahead of Great Britain (silver in 3: 11.2 min) and Canada (bronze in 3: 12.8 min).

After finishing his career, he worked as a coach at the University of Connecticut and from 1946 to 1967 at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island .
