Arthur Harnden

Arthur Harnden ( Arthur Harold "Art" Harnden ; born May 20, 1924 in Yoakum, Lavaca County , Texas , USA ; † September 30, 2016 in Corpus Christi , Texas, USA) was an American sprinter who focused on the 400 Meter had specialized.

Life

Arthur Harnden grew up on the family farm in Yoakum. He went to the United States Army Air Forces and was stationed with the Eighth Air Force in England. During the Second World War he flew 23 missions over Germany. After that war, he returned to Texas A&M University to take his exam.

At the Olympic Games in London in 1948 he formed the American team in the 4 x 400 meter relay with Cliff Bourland , Roy Cochran and Mal Whitfield , which finished in 3: 10.4 min with a lead of more than four seconds won the gold medal before France. Harnden was the first runner.

As a single runner over 400 meters, he was not at the start. The USA were represented in London over 400 meters with Mal Whitfield, David Bolen and George Guida, all three of whom made it to the final.

The London Games were his only participation in the Olympics. He achieved his best time of 47.3 s in 1948 as third at the US championships.

Harnden was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Texas A&M University in 1966. He worked for Texaco for 40 years and Walmart for 21 years.
