Henry Joseph Carr (born November 27, 1941 in Montgomery , Alabama , † May 29, 2015 in Griffin , Georgia ) was an American sprinter and Olympic champion .

Carr was one of the strongest runners in the 1960s. He was an extraordinary sprinter in high school before becoming a star during his undergraduate studies at Arizona State University . He won three national titles, set new world records over 200 meters, 220 yards and 4 times 440 yards. In 1963 he won the NCAA championship over 200 meters and in the same year set a new world record over 200 meters in 20.4 seconds and one over 220 yards in 20.3 seconds. In 1964 he increased his performance again and set a new world record over 220 yards in 20.2 seconds. In 1963 and 1964, he led the world rankings over 200 meters.

At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he won the gold medal in the 200-meter run , ahead of his compatriot Paul Drayton and Edwin Roberts from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the team gold medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay , together with Ollan Cassell , Mike Larrabee and Ulis Williams , ahead of teams from the UK and Trinidad and Tobago.

American football

After serving as a sprinter, he played defensive back American football for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected in the 1965 NFL Draft by the Giants in the fourth round as the 43rd player. Between 1965 and 1967 he was used in 37 games in the regular season , but never ran as a starter . He scored a touchdown (after an interception ) in the NFL.

Private life

Carr was married and had two daughters and a son. He belonged to the Jehovah's Witness community and died on May 29, 2015 at the age of 73 of complications from cancer.
