Andrew William "Andy" Stanfield (born December 29, 1927 in Washington, DC , † June 15, 1985 in Livingston , New Jersey ) was an American sprinter and Olympic champion .
As a child, he moved with his parents to Jersey City , Hudson County , New Jersey . Even in high school you could see what a talented athlete he was, especially in the sprint and long jump . After serving in the army, he went to Seton Hall University in 1948 and the following year he won his first national titles in 100 and 200 meters , in 1950 over 60 yards, in 1951 in long jump, in 1952 again over 200 meters and in 1953 over 220 yards. During the same period he also won nine IC4A titles.
Internationally, his strengths were more in the 200-meter run. In 1951 he broke the world record set by Barney Ewell over 200 meters with his own time of 20.6 s, which he confirmed in 1952 and 1956.
As the holder of the world record, he started at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 and won the gold medal in the 200-meter run in front of the other two Americans Thane Baker (silver) and James Gathers (bronze), as well as the team gold medal in the 4 times -100 meter relay together with his teammates Dean Smith , Harrison Dillard and Lindy Remigino , ahead of the teams from the Soviet Union (silver) and Hungary (bronze). At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 he tried to defend his title, but only won the silver medal over 200 meters, between the two other Americans Bobby Morrow (gold) and Thane Baker (bronze).
