Bruny Surin (born July 12, 1967 in Cap-Haïtien , Haiti ) is a former Canadian athlete and Olympic champion .
In 1975 Surin moved with his family to Canada, where he has lived since then. At first he trained in the long jump discipline and only later switched to the 100-meter run . He made his first international appearance in 1987 at the Pan American Games , where he reached 15th place in the long jump. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he also reached 15th place in the long jump.
At the Commonwealth Games in 1990 in Auckland , New Zealand , he won the bronze medal in the 100-meter run behind the Englishman Linford Christie (gold) and the Nigerian Davidson Ezinwa (silver) and reached seventh place in the long jump. At the 1991 World Championships, he finished eighth over 100 meters. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he participated as a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team, but could not win any medals.
At the 1993 World Championships he was fifth over 100 meters, but won the team bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay race . At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria , British Columbia , he won the team gold medal in the 4-by-100-meter relay race, but did not get past the semi-finals in the 100-meter run. At the 1995 World Championships , he won the silver medal and the team gold medal in the 100-meter relay race over 100 meters.
At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the Canadian relay team entered the race as the favorite, having won this competition almost every time for the past two years. Surin won the team gold medal along with teammates Robert Esmie , Glenroy Gilbert and Donovan Bailey , ahead of the teams from the USA (silver) and from Brazil (bronze). Surin came over 100 meters to the semi-finals. Together with the Canadian team, he won another gold medal at the 1997 World Championships and the 1998 Goodwill Games . At the 1999 World Championships , he won the silver medal over 100 meters in a personal best of 9.84 s (also a Canadian record, at the same time as Donovan Bailey) . At the 2000 Olympic Games he only reached the semi-finals over 100 meters, as did his last championship fight at the 2001 World Championships .
