Yohan Blake (born December 26, 1989 in Saint James Parish ) is a Jamaican sprinter and the 2011 100 meter world champion .

His official best of 9.69 s makes him the second fastest sprinter of all time behind Usain Bolt and next to Tyson Gay .

Life

Blake was born to Veda and Shirley in Saint James Parish . He attended St. Jago High School in the former capital Spanish Town .

In 2006 he finished third in the 100 meter final at the Junior World Championships in Beijing . He won gold with the Jamaica relay. At the CARIFTA Games 2007 he ran the fastest time ever run by a Jamaican junior with 10.11 seconds. In 2008 he reached only fourth place in the 100 meter discipline at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz . His season came in second.

His nickname "The Beast" (German: the beast) he received, said as Usain Bolt in 2008 in an interview that Blake, who earlier this year was changed to the Racers Track Club, like an animal ( "beast") training.

At the Jamaican championships in Kingston at the end of June 2009, he had tested positive for the stimulant 4-methyl-2-hexanamine . First, he was acquitted because the substance is not on the prohibited list of WADA stood, but was later occupied by a three-month ban because the substance has a similar structure to a banned doping substances.

2011

Blake won gold in 2011

In June he showed his ambitions for a medal at the World Championships at the trials, in which he finished second behind Asafa Powell .

On August 5, 2011 he celebrated his first ever Diamond League victory at the Diamond League Meeting in London with 9.95 s, benefiting from Asafa Powell's cancellation due to an injury.

On August 28, 2011, he won the gold medal of the World Championships over 100 meters in Daegu . With 9.92 s at 1.4 m / s headwind, he prevailed against his competitors Walter Dix and Kim Collins . Previously, the big favorite Usain Bolt had been disqualified due to his early start. In the semifinals, Blake was the fastest with 9.95 s. Blake won a second gold medal at these world championships together with Nesta Carter , Michael Frater and Usain Bolt in the 4 x 100 meter relay competition . The Jamaican relay team set a new world record with a time of 37.04 s.

At the final of the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich , he won the race ahead of Asafa Powell with a new personal best of 9.82 seconds in calm conditions. On September 11th, he won the ISTAF in Berlin with another 9.82 seconds ahead of Kim Collins, setting a new competition record. At the Memorial Van Damme of the IAAF Diamond League on September 16, 2011 in Brussels, Blake improved his personal best in the 200 meters from 19.78 s to 19.26 s, thereby setting the world's best for the year. Only the world record holder Usain Bolt has run faster so far.

2012

Olympic Games 2012: start over 200 meters

After surprisingly becoming world champion last year, he consolidated his position as one of the world's best sprinters in the course of the year.

At the Camperdown Classics in Kingston in February, he ran the 400 meters with his new personal best of 46.49 s in second place. On April 14th, Blake won his first race of the season: At the UTech Classics in Kingston, he ran the 100 meters in 9.90 seconds in the rain. His Racers relay, in which his training partner Usain Bolt ran as the final runner, won in 37.82 s. In his first 200-meter start, he won ahead of compatriot Ashmeade with 19.91 s, where he also set the world best of the year. At the meeting on the Cayman Islands he also won the 100 meters with 9.84 s and was satisfied with the development of the season so far after the race. At the Adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 9, he won in 9.90 seconds from Keston Bledman . In the last run before the Jamaican Trials , he finished first in Edmonton with 10.05 seconds. At the Jamaican Trials on June 29, he won ahead of Usain Bolt in a new personal best of 9.75 s and thus secured his participation in the Olympics. He inflicted his first defeat in two years on his training partner and, with his time, confirmed the statements of his coach, who had given him chances against Bolt at the beginning of the year. Two days later he defeated Bolt over 200 meters with 19.80 s and beat him for the first time in five years at this distance. At the same time he equalized the previous world best performance of himself and qualified for the Olympics. In his last race before the Olympics, he won in Lucerne on July 17th. With a new meeting record of 9.85 seconds, he won easily ahead of Michael Frater.

At the Olympic Games he reached the final as the first of his preliminary and semi-finals. There he again ran his best performance of 9.75 s, but only came second behind Usain Bolt and won his first Olympic medal. In the final of the 200-meter run, he won the silver medal behind Bolt in 19.44 s, the seventh fastest time ever. Together with Carter, Frater and Bolt, he won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay with a new world record.

Blake (lane 4) on his 9.69 s run in Lausanne (2012)

On August 23, he won ahead of Tyson Gay and Nesta Carter in Lausanne , with 9.69 seconds he also managed to stay below the 9.7 seconds mark as the third sprinter. A week later he won in Zurich and this time again kept the competition at a distance with 9.76 seconds. He completed his last race of the season over 200 meters at the Memorial Van Damme . With 19.54 s he ran the third fastest time of the year and secured the victory ahead of Young and Lemaitre.

2013

As in the previous year, he started the season with a 400-meter run at the Camperdown Classics in Kingston. On February 9, he started a run with his teammate Warren Weir , who finished with 46.21 s in front of him; Blake finished third in his run with 46.77s. On February 23, he was also part of the Racers Lions 4-by-400-meter relay, which was second with 3: 04.00 s at the Gibson Relays in Kingston. At the end of his preparation for the season, he ran a new best time over 400 meters at the UWI Invitational on March 23 with 46.33 seconds.

As in the previous year, he wanted to avoid clashes at competitions with his training partner Usain Bolt for as long as possible. Blake agreed early on for meetings in Shanghai and Doha , while Bolt started in the Caribbean and the USA. On April 13th he injured himself at the UTech Classics , where he started over 100 meters. At first it appeared to be just a cramp, but an MRI later revealed the injury was worse than previously thought. As a result, he had to cancel his participation in the three meetings in Kingston , Doha and Shanghai. Even in June, where the Jamaican championships were taking place, he did not start at any international meeting. Reports from the Jamaica Observer newspaper at the end of June that Blake would not take part in the World Cup because of a planned operation and therefore would not be part of the Jamaica squad, was immediately denied by his manager Cubie Seegobin. On July 17th, however, he had to announce that Blake would not take part in the World Championships because of the injury he had suffered in April, which also meant his premature end of the season.

2014

After his injury, Blake initially only started at smaller local meetings. On February 8, he made his comeback at the Camperdown Classics over the 400 meter distance. He finished sixth after 47.20 seconds. Also in Kingston, he completed a relay race, in which his Racers-Lion team won in 38.13 s, and a 200-meter run, which he won with 20.49 s despite training and fitness deficits. He entered the international stage in May at the Great City Games in Manchester . With 14.71 s he ran the fourth fastest time ever over the 150 meter distance. As a member of the Jamaican 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 meter relay, he won the IAAF World Relays, which were held for the first time . On May 24th, the Jamaican team set a new world record there with 1: 18.63 minutes, before they could consolidate their position as the nation of top sprinters a day later in 37.77 seconds. In a different form, however, Blake presented himself at the following Diamond League meetings. In New York, after a catastrophic start, he was only second in 10.21 s and in Lausanne he was not fit enough in a 200-meter run in 20.48 s. In Glasgow, he injured his thigh while sprinting on July 11th and had to cancel his start at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and end the season.
