The Sainsbury's Anniversary Games (formerly the Norwich Union London Grand Prix and Aviva London Grand Prix ) is an annual athletics meeting . In 2014 it was held in Hampden Park in Glasgow , Scotland , in preparation for the Commonwealth Games taking place in Scotland this year . In 2013, it was held in the London Olympic Stadium in favor of his milestone birthday . The years before it took place in the Crystal Palace , but the venue for 2015 has not yet been determined, but it is expected to return to the Olympic Stadium. [obsolete] The meeting was sponsored by UK life insurance company Aviva until January , but is now sponsored by UK company Sainsburys . It is the most important British athletics meeting and is now one of the IAAF - Diamond League meetings. Before the Diamond League was founded, it was part of the IAAF Super Grand Prix competitions. The competition also includes the prestigious Emsley Carr Mile race, which has been held over a mile since 1953 .

history

The Emsley Carr Mile race, still one of the most important competitions of the London Grand Prix, was first held in 1953 at the White City Stadium . Emsley Carr , a track and field enthusiast and the editor of News of the World magazine , created the race in hopes that the first under-4-minute mile would pass on British soil. Gordon Pirie won the race in 1953, but did not achieve the intended goal, while Roger Bannister achieved the hoped-for time in Oxford in a parallel race. Since then, every winner of the race has been allowed to write their name in a book whose red leather cover is identical to that of the Bible used at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II . The first under 4-minute mile in the Emsley-Carr race was achieved by Derek Ibbotsen in 1956, and many of the best middle-distance runners have since won the race, including Sebastian Coe , Steve Ovett and Hicham El Guerrouj .

On January 24, 2013 it was announced that the 2013 competition would be held on the occasion of the milestone birthday at the Olympic Stadium in London instead of the Crystal Palace . The London Legacy Development Corporation wanted to hold another athletics event at the stadium in the summer after the 2012 Summer Olympics . After the 2013 competition, a return to the Crystal Palace was ruled out as the administration believed it would have meant a step backwards. Hampden Park , which would host the Commonwealth Games , was chosen as the venue before the 2015 meeting was to return to London after a break during the construction of the Olympic Stadium. Sainsburys was announced as the new main sponsor for 4 years in January 2014 . In February 2014, the competition for the year in Glasgow was announced as the Glasgow Grand Prix . Another non- IAAF Diamond League track and field meeting was announced at the same time as the 2014 Sainsbury's Anniversary Games as a street athletics meeting in London.
