The Prefontaine Classic (short: PreClassic ) is an athletics meeting that is held annually in the Hayward Field Stadium of the University of Oregon in Eugene . It is one of the most important athletics events in the United States and has been part of the international competition series of the IAAF Diamond League since 2010 . Before the Diamond League was founded, it was part of the IAAF Grand Prix competitions.

history

In 1973 the meeting was founded as the “Hayward Field Restoration Meet” . The competition was intended to help raise money for a renovation of the stadium's west stand. In 1975 the competition was named the Bowerman Classic in honor of the university's athletics coach, Bill Bowerman, and was rescheduled for June 7th of that year. After the unexpected death of University of Oregon alumni middle and long distance runner Steve Prefontaine in a car accident on May 30th of that year, the name was changed to today's Pre Classic on June 1st, 6 days before the event . The Pre Classic has been sponsored by Nike since 1978 .

In 2019, the Prefontaine Classic took place at Stanford University's Cobb Track and Angell Field Stadium in Stanford , as Hayward Field in Eugene was already under renovation for the 2020 US Olympic Trials and the 2021 World Athletics Championships .
