Jaheel Hyde (born February 2, 1997 ) is a Jamaican hurdler who specializes in the 400-meter hurdles and was also successful in the 110-meter hurdles at the beginning of his career .

Athletic career

Jaheel Hyde gained his first international experience at the CARIFTA Games 2012 in Hamilton , where he won the gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles. A year later he won the gold medals over 110 meter hurdles and with the 4 x 100 meter relay as well as the bronze medals over 200 meters and with the 4 x 400 meter relay at the games in Nassau . At the youth world championships in Donetsk he won the hurdles sprint in a new championship record of 13.13 s and also with the Jamaican sprint relay (1000 meters), in which he was used in the preliminary run. In 2014 Hyde won four gold medals at the CARIFTA Games in Fort-de-France over both hurdles and with both relays and then at the Junior World Championships in Eugene the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles and bronze with the 4-by-400-meter relay . Finally, at the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , he won the gold medal over the 110-meter hurdles in a new U19 world record of 12.96 s, replacing the Frenchman Wilhem Belocian as the record holder.

In 2015 he won the gold medal again over both hurdles at the CARIFTA Games in Basseterre and also with the 4 x 400 meter relay. Since 2016 Hyde has specialized in the 400 meter hurdles and did not contest a single race over the adult hurdles over the 110 meter hurdles. At the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz he won in 49.03 s ahead of the American Taylor McLaughlin and Kyron McMaster from the British Virgin Islands. He also qualified for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , where he was eliminated in the semifinals with 49.17 s . In 2017 he qualified for the first time for the World Championships in London , where he was also eliminated in the semifinals with 49.75 s .

In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the first time and won the bronze medal there in 49.16 s.

In 2017, Hyde became the Jamaican champion in the 400-meter hurdles. He is a student at the University of the West Indies and was also active as a footballer at the beginning of his career.
