Matthew Hughes (born August 3, 1989 in Oshawa ) is a Canadian obstacle runner .

Athletic career

Matthew Hughes gained his first international experience at the Pan American Junior Championships 2007 in São Paulo , where he finished fourth over the 3000 meter obstacle. In 2008 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , where he was eliminated in the first round. In 2011 he qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Daegu , where he was eliminated with 8: 58.52 minutes in the third heat. Two years later he finished sixth at the World Championships in Moscow , breaking the 28-year-old national record.

In 2014 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for the first time , where he finished fourth in 8: 21.88 minutes. He also finished seventh in the Athletics Continental Cup in Marrakech . In 2015 he won the Pan American Games in Toronto in 8: 32.18 minutes and celebrated his greatest success to date. He also took part in the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished eighth in the final with a time of 8: 18.63 minutes . 2016 he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he in the finals reached the tenth place.

In 2017 he took part in his fourth World Championships in London , where he finished sixth in the final in 8: 21.84 minutes. In 2018 he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and finished fourth there with a time of 8: 12.33 min.

Between 2013 and 2015 and between 2017 and 2019 Hughes became the Canadian champion in obstacle course. He graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in exercise science .
