Gabriele Ivy Grunewald (born Anderson; born June 25, 1986 in Perham , Minnesota ; † June 11, 2019 in Minneapolis ) was an American middle and long-distance runner .

Life

In 2004 she finished the High School in Perham . She then attended the University of Minnesota , where she earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in 2011. During this time she started for the university team Gophers . In 2013 she married the marathon runner Justin Grunewald. Grunewald had four siblings, three brothers and one sister.

Sickness and death

In 2009 she was diagnosed with adenoid-cystic carcinoma for the first time . Thyroid cancer was diagnosed the following year . In 2016 and 2017 she contracted the rare and malignant adenoid-cystic carcinoma again. In 2018 she founded the Brave Like Gabe foundation . The donations received are intended to support research into rare cancers. She died on June 11, 2019 at the age of 32. Grunewald was buried in the Washburn-McReavy Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. The funeral mass was held in the Basilica of Saint Mary .

Sports

At the US Olympic Trials 2012 she finished fourth in the 1,500 meter run and thus missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in London by one place.

In 2014 she qualified as US indoor champion over 3000 meters for the indoor world championships in Sopot , where she finished ninth. At the Athletics Continental Cup in Marrakech , she was sixth over the same distance.

Honors

The new women's locker room for the Minneapolis University Athletics University Team Gopher was unveiled in May 2019 and named Brave Like Gabe women's locker room .

On June 21, 2019, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared June 25, her birthday, Gabe Day .

In Perham, the bike path in Arvig Park was renamed Brave Like Gabe Running and Bike Trail in August 2019 . There was also a cross-country run through the park with the Brave Like Gabe Early Bird .
