history

At the beginning of the 20th century, a desire arose in the rapidly growing city of Minneapolis to build a new cathedral. At Christmas 1903, Archbishop John Ireland presented the first plans for the construction, so that the first groundbreaking could take place just four years later on August 7, 1907. The architect was Emmanuel Louis Masqueray . After seven years of construction, the first Holy Mass was held in the newly built cathedral on May 31, 1914 . In 1926, during a solemn ceremony with Pope Pius XI. as the first cathedral in the United States to have minor basilica status and became the Basilica of Saint Mary of Minneapolis . In 1975 it was listed on the United States' National Register of Historic Places .

After water damage occurred in the 1980s, renovation work began on the cathedral. In addition, the old dome was replaced by a new one. In 2000, however, water damage was found again, which makes further remedial measures necessary.

The Basilica Block Party , a two-day music festival, has been held annually since 1995 . The income from this will benefit the preservation of the cathedral and those in need.
