Abel Kiprop Mutai (born October 2, 1988 in Chepteon , Nandi County ) is a Kenyan obstacle runner .

His father was a long-distance runner and his mother was a 400-meter runner. In high school he was encouraged by his teacher William Matei.

At the World Athletics Championships in 2005 he was subsequently declared the winner of the 2000 m obstacle after the first-placed Tareq Mubarak Taher from Bahrain was disqualified for manipulating his age. In 2007 he became the African junior champion over 3000 m obstacle.

In 2008 he joined the Kenyan armed forces. After having to take a complete break in 2010 due to an injury to the Achilles tendon , he made his breakthrough in 2012. He set his personal best at the Golden Gala in Rome with 8: 01.67 minutes, qualified third in the Kenyan eliminations for the Olympic Games in London , won the African Athletics Championships in Porto Novo and won the bronze medal in the Olympic race .

In 2013 he finished seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow .

Abel Kiprop Mutai is 1.75 m tall and weighs 62 kg. He is trained by Claudio Berardelli and supervised by the manager Federico Rosa. He supports his six siblings with his income. He is married and had a son in 2010.
