Punta Allen , officially Javier Rojo Gómez , is a small fishing village on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo . It has 469 inhabitants (2010). Punta Allen is located in an area with a high risk of hurricanes .

geography

The settlement is located at the southern end of the elongated Boca Paila peninsula east of the Bahía de la Ascensión (Ascensión Bay) on the Caribbean Sea , a tributary of the Atlantic Ocean . On the west side a lagoon extends to the mainland. The place is the largest settlement within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve .

Punta Allen is part of the Municipio Tulum, which was founded in 2008 .

Punta Allen can be reached via the gravel road leading along the coast from Tulum, 40 km to the north, or via Felipe Carrillo Puerto with one of the regular water taxis .

Sights and activities

With its fine sandy beach running north-south on the Caribbean side, which slopes gently into the sea, and the offshore reef , which weakens the surf, Punta Allen offers good opportunities for relaxation and swimming.

Snorkeling or diving trips on the reef and deep sea tours for sport fishing are popular . With various local providers you can go on guided day or half day tours in the surrounding nature reserve.

Economy and Infrastructure

Due to the location, there are no industrial plants in Punta Allen. Service providers have developed through tourism. The village has no connection to the public electricity network. The electricity required is generated with solar and wind power plants, alternatively generators.

There are several restaurants along the beach. There are some shops in the village itself.

tourism

In Punta Allen, there is gentle tourism so as not to seriously damage the sensitive tropical ecosystem of the nature reserve. The restrictions on comfort that arise with the use of ecologically responsible technologies (use of rainwater, solar energy and wind power, waste minimization and biological wastewater treatment) are accepted by visitors.
