Water taxi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A water taxi is a boat or a watercraft that, like a taxi , is used for local public transport in cities with waterways, especially on rivers and canals.

description

There are water taxis in different parts of the world. The northern Italian city of Venice is a classic example of water taxi traffic . Many watercraft operate according to timetables and on fixed routes with predefined landing stages, these are then considered water buses , in Venice these are the vaporetti . But there are also water taxis which, similar to taxis on the street, can be chartered by passengers for certain routes . The fare is then charged based on the distance actually covered. In many cities around the world, the use of water taxis has proven to be an inexpensive and fast alternative to congested road traffic.

In Germany, water taxis operate between the ports of Stralsund or Schaprode and the island of Hiddensee . In Berlin, the planned operation of water taxis on the Spree in 2007 turned out to be complicated due to extensive regulatory requirements.

In the North Frisian Wadden Sea there was a catamaran operated by the shipping company Watten Fährlinien in Husum , Liinsand, from winter 2017/2018 to summer 2019 , which was used as a "Wattentaxi" when requested. The fare of the 18.7 m long and 7.2 m wide catamaran, which can carry up to 50 passengers, was based on the route and the number of people carried.
