Nala and Rafiki are two passenger ferries of HADAG AG . They arecalled water taxis and operate as port ferries within the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) in the port of Hamburg . Both ships were named after characters from the musical " The Lion King ".

General data

The passenger ships were between August 2001 and May 2002 by the shipyards SET shipbuilding u. Development company Tangermünde and SSB Spezialschiffbau Oortkaten , Hamburg-Ochsenwerder , built. The total cost was 2.4 million euros .

Both ships were christened on May 10, 2002 during the 813th  birthday of the port by an actress from Nala from the musical at the St. Pauli jetties and then began their first official voyage.

Technical specifications

The structural dimensions of the ships were 24.95 meters for the overall length , 6.4 meters for the width and 1.4 meters for the draft . The side height is two meters, the height above the waterline three meters. The actual dimensions sometimes differ slightly.

The Nala and Rafiki are painted yellow-orange and carry advertising for the musical "The Lion King". They have a main deck with a roofed structure throughout. In front is the wheelhouse , behind it the boarding area with a movable ramp each on port and starboard . Behind the approach there is a closed passenger compartment with 70 fixed and 8 further folding seats and two toilets in the rear . Both ships can each carry up to 114 people, making them the smallest in the HADAG fleet.

The ships are moved by a marine diesel engine with an output of 328 kilowatts. The motor drives a pod drive with counter-rotating propellers . With the ship propulsion a speed of 12  knots is reached. There is a transverse thruster in the bow area .

In addition to the Port of Hamburg, the possible sailing area includes zones two to four of the inland vessel inspection regulations (BinSchUO), which extend to the inland waterways all the way to the sea .

In 2003 the ships were equipped with electronic destination displays and an Elna FIS (River Information System). The new navigation system consists of an Elna River Radar 4007 / 9TFT and an Inland ECDIS Radar Pilot 720. It combines the radar image and the turning indicator and sets its own position, that of other vehicles with direction and speed, as well as standing obstacles DGPS - supported on an electronic Elbe map accurate to the meter. The investment costs for the system were around 35,000 euros per ship. Nala , Rafiki and the Harmonie , another HADAG ferry, were among the first three ships in the port of Hamburg to be equipped with them.

Ferry service

The ships Nala and Rafiki have been used on the port ferry route 73 Landungsbrücken – Oderhöft since the 2002 summer timetable. Due to the flat design of the ships, the Argentina Bridge on Hamburg-Steinwerder can be safely driven under even at medium floods. As a result, line 73 could be extended to Oderhöft on Steinwerder and ferry line 77, formerly ferry VII, which until then ran from the St. Pauli landing stages there, was discontinued. By merging the ferry lines, HADAG says it saves around 100,000 euros in operating costs per year. In addition, the water taxis are used to transfer visitors to the musical "The Lion King" from the landing stages to the theater in the harbor on the opposite bank of the Elbe.

The ships are the only ones in the HADAG fleet that can operate in the Speicherstadt .
