Dwight Phillips (born October 1, 1977 in Decatur , Georgia ) is a former American track and field athlete who specialized in the long jump . In this discipline he was once Olympic champion and four times world champion.

Sports career

Phillips started out as a sprinter , but soon switched to the triple jump , in which he achieved a personal best of 16.41 m in 1999, and the long jump. In the latter, he qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , where he finished eighth. In 2003 he won gold at both the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham and the World Championships in Paris . In 2004 he qualified as the first of the US trials for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he was Olympic champion with 8.59 m. He defended his title at the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and won the bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka . At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin and at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he won the gold medal again both times.

At the US Trials in 2008, Phillips was fourth unable to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing and fell victim to the tough American qualification procedure.

With his best performance of 8.74 m, Phillips ranks seventh on the all-time world best list together with Larry Myricks and Erick Walder (as of August 22, 2009).

Dwight Phillips is 1.80 m tall and weighs 82 kg.
