Willie Steele

William "Willie" Samuel Steele (born July 14, 1923 in Seeley (California) , † September 19, 1989 in Oakland ) was an American athlete . With a height of 1.80 m, his competition weight was 73 kg.

Willie Steele was world best of the year in the long jump in 1942 with 7.81 meters . He then served as a soldier in World War II. After the war he was world best of the year from 1946 to 1948. His best performance of 8.07 meters in 1947 was the second best performance worldwide behind Jesse Owens .

In 1948 he won the long jump at the 1948 Olympic Games . At 7.825 meters he was 27 centimeters ahead of the second, the Australian Theo Bruce .
