Tajay Gayle (born August 2, 1996 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican long jumper .

Athletic career

In 2016 Tajay Gayle increasingly competed in the long jump and set a personal best of 7.54 m. The following year, he jumped 8 meters for the first time on February 11th in Montego Bay . In July he started at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat , his first competition outside of Jamaica. With 7.41 m, however, he lagged behind his previous season performances.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , he finished fourth with 8.12 m. In Rome he rose to 8.17 m, his first victory in the Diamond League he achieved on July 13 in Rabat. At the NACAC Championships in Toronto in early August , he won the silver medal behind Marquis Dendy from the United States with 8.24 m . After a second place in Birmingham , he went to the final of the Diamond League in Zurich and finished fourth with 8.15 m.

On May 4, 2019, he improved to 8.30 m in Kingston . Two weeks later he won a Diamond League competition for the second time in Shanghai . In August he took part in the Pan American Games in Lima for the first time and won the silver medal behind the Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarría with 8.17 m . He also qualified for the World Championships in Doha and won there with a new Jamaican record and an annual world best of 8.69 m, as he only reached the final in twelfth place in the qualification.

In 2019, Gayle became the Jamaican long jump champion.
