Zhang Guowei ( Chinese 張國偉 / 张国伟 , Pinyin Zhang Guowei ; * 4. June 1991 in Yantai ) is a retired Chinese high jumper .
Athletic career
Zhang Guowei gained his first international experience in 2010 when he won the silver medal at the Junior Asian Championships in Hanoi with a 2.23 m jump. The following year he finished eighth at the Asian Championships in Kobe with 2.15 m and also qualified for the World Championships in Daegu , where he reached the finals, where he finished tenth with 2.25 m. In 2012 he won the silver medal behind the Katari Mutaz Essa Barshim at the Asian Indoor Championships in Hangzhou with a height of 2.28 m and then finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul with 2.31 m. In the summer he took part in the Olympic Games in London for the first time, but failed there with 2.21 m in qualification .
In 2013 he finished ninth at the World Championships in Moscow with 2.29 m and in 2014 he won the bronze medal at the Asian Indoor Championships in Hangzhou with 2.20 m behind Katari Barshim and Majd Eddin Ghazal from Syria. He then came in seventh at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot with 2.29 m. In autumn he took part in the Asian Games in Incheon and won the silver medal behind Barshim with 2.33 m. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , he jumped 2.33 m in the first attempt. After he failed at 2.36 , like the Canadian Derek Drouin and the Ukrainian Bohdan Bondarenko , the three jumpers had to play off. Drouin skipped 2.34 and won gold, while Zhang and Bondarenko took silver together. In 2016 he took part again in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and was eliminated from the qualification there with 2.22 m . In 2017 he won the silver medal behind the South Korean Woo Sang-hyeok at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar with a height of 2.28 m . Injuries subsequently slowed him down repeatedly.
In March 2019, the Chinese Athletics Federation banned him for violating the regulations on commercial activities and therefore started competitions in Europe. In early April 2020, Zhang announced the end of his career in sports.
In 2012 and 2017 he became the Chinese high jump champion.
