Majed Aldin Tarad Ghazal ( Arabic مجد الدين غزال, DMG Maǧd ad-Dīn Ġazāl ; * April 21, 1987 in Damascus ) is a Syrian high jumper .

Athletic career

Majd Eddin Ghazal gained his first international experience at the Pan-Arab Junior Championships 2006 in Cairo , where he won the bronze medal with 2.09 m. The following year he also won bronze at the Arab Championships in Amman with 2.17 m and finished 14th at the Asian Championships there with 2.10 m. He then won the bronze medal at the Pan-Arab Games in Cairo with 2.14 m. In 2008 he won the silver medal behind Kazakhs Sergei Sassimowitsch at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha with 2.21 m . During the outdoor season he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was eliminated with 2.20 m in the qualification . In 2009 he was ninth at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara with 2.15 m and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Berlin with the same height. Then he won at the Indoor Asian Games in Hanoi with 2.22 m, the silver medal behind the Kazakhs Vitali Zykunow and was eighth at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou with 2.10 m. Before that, he also won silver at the Arab Championships in Damascus with 2.16 m.

In 2010 he took part in the Asian Games in Guangzhou for the first time and was eliminated there with 2.10 m in qualification. The following year he won the silver medal with 2.28 m at the Asian Championships in Kobe behind the Katari Mutaz Essa Barshim . He was then at the Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro with 2.17 m eighth and retired at the World Championships in Daegu with 2.21 m in qualification. In October, he won the silver medal at the Pan-Arab Championships in al-Ain with 2.22 m behind Barshim. At the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2012 in Hangzhou , he won the bronze medal with 2.24 m and qualified for the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul , where he was eliminated with 2.26 m in qualification. He also took part in the Olympic Games in London again and could not qualify for the final there with 2.16 m . 2013 followed an eighth place at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin with skipped 2.18 m and a fifth place with 2.21 m at the Asian Championships in Pune . He then retired at the World Championships in Moscow with 2.22 m in qualification and won the silver medal behind Iranian Keyvan Ghanbarzadeh at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang with 2.20 m .

In 2014 he won the silver medal behind Barshim at the Asian Indoor Championships in Hangzhou with 2.20 m and was sixth at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea with 2.20 m. In 2015 he was eighth at the Asian Championships in Wuhan with a skipped 2.10 m . He then retired at the World Championships in Beijing with 2.29 m in qualification and later won with 2.31 m at the Military World Games in Mungyeon . At the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha the following year he won the silver medal with 2.28 m and he also took part for the third time in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he was seventh with 2.29 m in the final . In 2017 he won again at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku with 2.28 m and won the bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar with 2.24 m. Then he surprisingly won the bronze medal behind Barshim and the Russian Danil Lyssenko at the World Championships in London with 2.29 m in the final . At the beginning of September he also won the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat with 2.26 m .

In 2018 he won the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona with 2.28 m and won the bronze medal behind the Chinese Wang Yu and Woo Sang-hyeok from South Korea in his third participation in the Asian Games in Jakarta with 2.24 m . He then finished fourth in the Athletics Continental Cup in Ostrava with 2.24 m skipped. At the Asian Championships in Doha in 2019 , he won with a jump of 2.31 m. He qualified for the World Championships there , where he surprisingly retired with 2.17 m in the qualification . He then won the silver medal behind the Russian Ilya Ivanyuk at the World Military Games in Wuhan by jumping 2.20 m .
