Wang Yu ( Chinese  王 宇 , Pinyin Wáng Yǔ; born August 18, 1991 in Zhuhai ) is a Chinese high jumper .

Athletic career

Wang Yu gained his first international experience at the Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen , where he finished fourth with 2.24 m. Also at the Indoor Asian Championships in Hangzhou in the following year he was fourth with 2.15 m. In 2013 he won the bronze medal at the Student World Games in Kazan with 2.28 m and thus qualified for the World Championships in Moscow , where he was eliminated with 2.22 s in qualification. In the following year he could not qualify for the final at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot with 2.25 m. In September he first took part in the Asian Games in Incheon , South Korea , and finished fourth with 2.25 m. In 2015 he took part in the Asian Championships in Wuhan and finished seventh with 2.15 m. He qualified again for the World Championships in Beijing , where he was eliminated with 2.26 m in qualification .

In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he also failed to qualify for the final with 2.22 m , as well as the World Championships in London the following year , where he actually reached the final. but did not run again because of an injury. In 2018 he finished sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham with a height of 2.20 m. At the end of August he took part again in the Asian Games in Jakarta and won there in the absence of Mutaz Essa Barshim with 2.30 m. The following year he qualified for the World Championships in Doha , where he finished tenth in the final with 2.24 m skipped . He was then at the Military World Games in Wuhan with 2.00 m eleventh.

In 2015 and 2019, Wang became the Chinese high jump champion.
