The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 2.32 m. Due to the development of the heights skipped by the participants in the qualification, not a single jumper even approached the required qualification height. The twelve best starters from both qualification groups reached the final (highlighted in light green). After all, 2.25 m were necessary to participate in the finals with at most one failed attempt in the series.

final

August 19, 2008, 7:10 p.m.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final. Since nobody had even approached the level of qualification, the top twelve high jumpers from both qualification groups reached this final battle. Three British, two Russians, two Czechs and one participant each from Brazil, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Slovenia were represented.

There was no clear favorite. Among the medal candidates included the reigning world champion Donald Thomas of the Bahamas, the Russian World Cup -Second 2007 and 2005 Yaroslav Rybakov, the Swede Stefan Holm, Olympic champion in 2004 , third in the European Championships in 2006 and World Cup -Vierter of 2007. Even the World Cup - Third last year, Kyriakos Ioannou from Cyprus, the two Czechs Tomáš Janků as World Cup fifth in 2007 and Vice European Champion in 2006 and Jaroslav Bába as World Cup fifth in 2005, World Cup eighth in 2007 and Olympic third in 2004 and Andrei, the Russian European Champion in 2006 Silnow entered this competition with good chances for a medal. World champion Thomas, however, already failed in the qualification.

At the fifth height of 2.32 m, eight athletes were still competing. However, only six of them had jumped the previous 2.29 m. The two British Germaine Mason and Martyn Bernard saved their two remaining attempts after each one failed jump over 2.29 m. Martyn Bernard was unsuccessful and finished ninth, while Mason mastered the new height with his first jump. Silnow and Holm were also successful with their first jumps and were thus at the top of the field according to the failed attempt rule. Rybakow and the German Raúl Spank jumped 2.32 m in their third attempts and were together in fourth place. The two Czechs Bába and Janků played poker after each unsuccessful attempt and saved their further jumps for the next heights.

Now 2.34 m was laid. Silnow, Mason and Rybakow were each successful on the first attempt. Holm and Bába refrained from jumping after one failed jump, whereby the Czech only had one attempt, because he had already cracked once at 2.32 m and then bet on the coming heights. Janků was eliminated after he was unsuccessful with his two remaining jumps, and thus finished seventh. Spank also tore twice, but had one more try, which he took to the next height. According to the failed attempt rule, Silnow was now alone ahead, followed by Mason with one failed jump and Rybakow with two failed attempts.

At 2.36 m it was tight for all remaining jumpers. Only Silnow managed the height effortlessly in the first round. All other participants dropped out here. Michael Mason won the silver and Jaroslaw Rybakow the bronze medal. Both had crossed 2.34 m. With each 2.32 m skipped, Stefan Holm was fourth ahead of Raúl Spank. Jaroslav Bába, who had managed 2.29 m, took sixth place. Andrei Silnow, who was determined to be the Olympic champion, had 2.42 m hung up, but he tried three times in vain.
