Michael Robert Christopher Mason (born September 30, 1986 in New Westminster ) is a Canadian high jumper .

Athletic career

Michael Mason gained his first international experience at the Junior World Championships 2004 in Grosseto , where he won the gold medal with 2.21 m. Two years later he won the bronze medal at the U23 NCAC championships in Santo Domingo with 2.19 m. In 2007 he took part in the Summer Universiade in Bangkok , where he was eliminated from the qualification with 2.10 m. In 2008 he qualified for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia and finished eighth with 2.27 m. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he retired with 2.25 m in qualification .

In 2009 he won the silver medal at the Student World Games in Belgrade with 2.23 m. In 2010 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi for the first time and was seventh there with 2.20 m. In 2012 he qualified again for the Olympic Games in London and this time finished eighth with 2.29 m in the final . In 2013 he took part in the World Championships in Moscow , where he was eliminated from the qualification with 2.17 m. The following year he was eighth with 2.25 m at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot and won bronze with 2.25 m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow . In 2015 he won silver with 2.31 m at the Pan American Games in Toronto and failed at the World Championships in Beijing with 2.26 minutes of qualification .

In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the third time and failed there with 2.26 m in qualification . At the 2017 World Championships in London, he did not make it into the final with 2.26 m . At the Commonwealth Games 2018 in the Australian Gold Coast , he finished sixth with 2.24 m.

In 2007 and 2008, as well as in 2017 and 2018, Mason was the Canadian high jump champion. He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver .
