August 11, 2017, 11:15 a.m. local time (12:15 p.m. CEST )

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualifying height required for direct entry into the final was 2.31 m. Since only six athletes jumped this height, the final field was filled with the following best jumpers from both groups to twelve participants. After all, 2.29 m achieved in the first or second jump with at most one further failed attempt was sufficient for participation in the final.

final

August 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. CEST )

The 2016 Olympic champion and reigning world champion Derek Drouin from Canada did not compete here in London . The favorites were especially the Olympic runner-up from 2016 and vice world champion from 2013 Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar, the Olympic third from 2016, world champion from 2013 and runner-up world champion from 2015 Bohdan Bondarenko from Ukraine as well as the two Olympic winners from 2016 Robert Grabarz from Great Britain and Andrij Prozenko from Ukraine. The Chinese Zhang Guowei, vice world champion together with Bondarenko in 2015, was among the participants. But the Chinese had already been eliminated in the qualification.

Nine high jumpers were still in the running when the 2.29 m was set up. With Barshim, Danil Lyssenko and Ilya Iwanjuk, who are starting under a neutral flag, Syrian Majd Eddin Ghazal, Mexican Edgar Rivera and British Robbie Grabarz, six of them have so far failed to make any attempt. The German Mateusz Przybylko and the US American Bryan McBride had two failed jumps and Bondarenko had three failed jumps. Barshim jumped the new height of 2.29 m as the only participant in the first attempt. Lyssenko and Ghazal followed suit with their second jumps each. Rivera and Przybylko were successful on their third attempts each. Grabarz, Ivanyuk and McBride failed three times while Bondarenko skipped the height.

Six jumpers tackled the 2.32 m now laid out. Barshim and Lyssenko mastered the altitude the first time, while all the other athletes were already at the end here. That was surprising, because the results achieved at World Championships and Olympic Games in recent years were higher. Majd Eddin Ghazal was now clear as the bronze medal winner due to the failed attempt rule, Rivera and Przybylko finished fourth and fifth. Bondarenko was only 2.26 m tall and finished ninth behind the two joint sixths Robbie Grabarz and Ilja Iwanjuk and Bryan McBride.

The decision about the world championship title was still pending. She fell at the next jump height of 2.35 m. Mutaz Essa Barshim was again confidently successful with his first attempt. Danil Lyssenko, on the other hand, tore three times and was vice world champion with his 2.32 m skipped. Mutaz Essa Barshim then tried his hand at 2.40 m. This time, however, this height was too high for him and so he became world champion for the first time with 2.35 m.
