route

The start and finish point of the route was on the "The Mail" road connecting Trafalgar Studios and Buckingham Palace on the corner of "Marlborough Road" near Marlborough House . Constantly on this route I passed St. James' Park to the south-west . Initially, the route headed northeast past the Trafalgar Studios. The path circled the statue "Equestrian Statue of Charles I" behind it on a roundabout and led back to the southwest on the almost dead straight street "The Mail". It went past the start and finish point to Buckingham Palace, where the Victoria Memorial was completely circled. So the route led back on the street "The Mail" to the start and finish point. The length of this route was two kilometers, so it had to be completed ten times when walking 20 km .

initial situation

At the 2016 Olympic Games , the Chinese walkers had done very successfully, as they had done at some major championships before. The Olympic champion of 2016 and vice world champion of 2015 Wang Zhen and the Olympic runner-up from 2016 Cai Zelin were not at the start here in London . The reigning world champion and European champion 2014 Miguel Ángel López from Spain, the Australian Olympic third from 2016 Dane Bird-Smith, the Canadian third from the World Cup in 2015 Benjamin Thorne, the Brazilian Caio Bonfim from the Olympic from 2016 and maybe also the Olympic fifth from were among the favorites 2016 Christopher Linke from Germany.

Course of competition

August 13, 2015, 2:20 p.m. local time (3:20 p.m. CEST )

The walkers started very quickly, but for the first few kilometers a large group stayed together at the top. The Chinese Wang Kaihua, the Japanese Isamu Fujisawa and also Linke tried to keep up the pace. After ten kilometers, Fujisawa had pulled away very easily, but was followed only two seconds behind by a group of fifteen people. A little later Fujisawa was part of the leading group again, which after a significant increase in pace had reduced to eight walkers by kilometer fifteen. Wang, Linke, the Colombian Éider Arévalo, Sergei Schirobokow, who started under a neutral flag, Bonfim, Fujisawa, Bird-Smith and the Spaniard Álvaro Martín were fourteen seconds ahead of the Japanese Daisuke Matsunaga and defending champion López. Another three seconds behind were the Japanese Eiki Takahashi and the South African Lebogang Shange.

As the goal got closer, the top group gradually got smaller. Finally Arévalo and Schirobokow remained, who were now fighting for the world title. At the finish line, the new world champion Éider Arévalo was just two seconds ahead of Sergei Schirobokow, who won the silver medal. Nine seconds after Shirobokov, Caio Bonfim crossed the finish line and won bronze. Lebogang Shange worked his way up to fourth place. He was fourteen seconds short of bronze. Christopher Linke was fifth three seconds behind, ahead of Dane Bird-Smith, Wang Kaihua and Álvaro Martín.
