Álvaro Martín Uriol (born June 18, 1994 in Llerena , Badajoz province ) is a Spanish walker . His greatest sporting success to date includes winning the 2018 European Championships in Berlin over the 20 km distance , in which he has specialized.

Athletic career

Martín has been participating in international competitions since 2010. At the Youth Olympic Games, which were held for the first time in Singapore , he finished 9th over the 10,000 meter distance. A year later he came in eighth place at the World Youth Championships in Lille , followed by fifth place at the World Junior Championships in Paris . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he took part in a major international event among adults for the first time, but was unable to finish the race there.

In 2013 he won the bronze medal over the 10,000 meter distance at the European Junior Championships . A month later he took part in the World Championships in Moscow and finished 24th over twice the distance. A year later, he finished sixth at the European Championships in Zurich .

At the U23 European Championships in 2015 in Tallinn , he won the silver medal over the 20 km distance, before taking part in the World Championships again, just like two years earlier . There he ran to 16th place and improved his time compared to his last appearance at the World Championships by more than three minutes.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , despite a similar time as at the World Championships the year before, he did not get past 22nd place. Previously, in May 2016, he set his current best time of 1:19:36 h over the 20 km distance at a meeting in Rome . He almost confirmed this time at the 2017 World Championships , which earned him eighth place.

In 2018 he achieved his greatest sporting success to date with his victory over the 20 km distance in 1:20:42 h at the European Championships in Berlin . A year later he finished 22nd at the World Championships in Doha in 1:33:20 h.
