Roland Wieser

Roland Wieser (born May 6, 1956 in Zschopau ) is a former German athlete who - starting for the GDR - won the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow (1:25:59 h) in the 20 km walk . He had achieved another great success two years earlier when he became European champion on the same route (1: 23: 11.5 h).

Roland Wieser had early successes, in 1971 as GDR youth champion and in 1975 as junior European champion in the 10 km walk. In 1978, the year of his European championship victory, he started at the GDR championships in 50 km walking and won.

After his Olympic success, however, he did not get any medal ranks at international highlights. In 1982 he was ninth at the European championships , in 1983 tenth at the world championships . In 1987 he ended his sports career.

First Roland Wieser learned vehicle mechanic and was later Sportinstrukteur the People's Police - Bureau in Berlin .

He started for SC Dynamo Berlin and trained with Max Weber . In his playing days he was 1.86 m tall and weighed 68 kg. In 1978 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
