Stan Vickers

Stanley Frank "Stan" Vickers (born June 18, 1932 in Lewisham , London, † April 19, 2013 ) was a British walker .

Life

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Stan Vickers took fifth place in the 20 km walk , setting a British record in 1:32:34 h. Two years later at the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , he defeated the 1956 Olympic champion Leonid Spirin and became European champion in 1:33:09 h. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he was third in 1:34:56 h behind Volodymyr Holubnytschyj from the Soviet Union and the Australian Noel Freeman .

He won five titles at the Championships of the British Amateur Athletic Association . In 1957 and 1958 he won over 2 miles and over 7 miles, respectively. Before the AAA championships in 1960, Vickers had set the British record over 2 miles, which George Larner had set in 1904 with 13: 11.4 minutes. At the championships, the all-time record fell, as Vickers won in 13: 02.4 minutes ahead of Ken Matthews , who also remained below the old record in 13: 09.6 minutes.

Stan Vickers was 1.85 m tall and weighed 60 kg during his playing days.
