Erick Bernabé Barrondo García (born June 14, 1991 in Aldea Chiyuc , San Cristóbal Verapaz ) is a Guatemalan walker .

Athletic career

Barrondo was originally a long-distance runner and only started walking after an injury, which he used as a rehabilitation measure. In the end, he stayed true to this discipline and placed himself under the care of Rigoberto Medina, who had also looked after Cristina López , the Salvadoran winner over 20 kilometers at the 2007 Pan American Games .

Internationally, he made his first appearance in March 2011 at the Pan American Race Walking Cup in Medellín , where he secured second place. During the IAAF World Race Walking Challenge of the same year, Barrondo achieved a 13th place in Sesto San Giovanni and was vieter in Dublin . Due to the latter performance, he was called to the small two-man squad (together with Jamy Franco , another walker) in his home country for the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea . There he finished tenth over the 20 kilometer distance in August. Almost exactly two months later, he won the Pan American Games in Guadalajara .

Afterwards Barrondo qualified for in London discharged 2012 Summer Olympics . There he won - quite unexpectedly for experts - the silver medal over 20 kilometers behind the Chinese Chen Ding . It was the first ever Olympic medal for Guatemala and afterwards he said: "If someone swaps his rifle or knife for a pair of sports shoes tomorrow to train, I would be the happiest person in the world." He won the 50 kilometer race disqualified after 40 kilometers lying in ninth position.

The same happened to him at the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow, when he was taken out of the race in the leading group over 20 kilometers two kilometers from the finish.
