Athletic career

Caio Bonfim entered 2007 at the age of 16 with the U18 World Championships in Ostrava at an international championship. In the 10-km walking competition, he took 12th place. A month earlier he was fifth in the U18 Pan American Championships in his home country of Brazil. Already one year later he competed in the U20 age group. At the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, he needed about three minutes less for the 10 km than one at the U18 World Championships a year earlier and finished sixth. At the U18 World Championships in Lima, he won the gold medal in a championship record of 43: 21.9 minutes.

In May 2009 Bonfim set his best time over 10 km in 40:40 minutes. In July he won the U18 South American Championships in Sao Paulo and a month later won the silver medal at the U18 Pan American Championships in Trinidad and Tobago, each over 10 km. In June 2010 he took part in the U20 World Championships in Moncton, Canada. There he competed again over 10 km and finished fourth in 41: 32.28 minutes. The 2010 South American Games took place in Medellín in March , during which the U23 South American Championships were held at the same time. Bonfim competed in international championships over 20 km for the first time and won the bronze medal in both ratings in 1:33:05 h. In 2011 he took part in the Universiade in Shenzhen. There he finished seventh in 1:27:19 h. In the same month he also took part in a world championship for adults for the first time, in Daegu , where he finished 17th and was almost three minutes faster than in Shenzhen.

In 2012 he won the gold medal at the U23 South American Championships in Sao Paulo in 1:23:22 h. Previously took part in the Olympic Games in London, which he finished in 38th place. In 2013 he also won the gold medal at the South American Adult Championships in Cartagena. In Moscow he was disqualified at the World Championships . Two years later things went better for him at the World Championships in Beijing and he finished sixth in 1:20:44 h. A month earlier he won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto. A year later he set a new Brazilian national record in 1:19:42 h at the Olympic Games in his home country. This brought him fourth place, finishing just 5 seconds behind bronze medalist Dane Bird-Smith from Australia. He also set a national record over the 50 km distance at the games in 3:47:02 h, which meant 9th place at the finish.

In 2017 he celebrated his greatest sporting success to date with the bronze medal from the World Championships in London. In 2019 he won another medal at the Pan American Games after Toronto in 2015; in Lima he came second. Again he competed over 50 km. In 3:57:54 h he was fourth. Before that, in June he improved his national record over 20 km to 1:18:47 h. At the World Championships in Doha, he competed over the 20 km. There he took 13th place under extreme conditions.
