Dane Bird-Smith (born July 15, 1992 in Kippa-Ring , Queensland ) is an Australian walker . The 1.87 m tall and 72 kg heavy athlete starts for the Queensland Racewalking Club.

Career

Bird-Smith achieved his first major successes at the Oceania Race Walking Championships, where he won gold in the juniors' 10 km in 2011 and gold in the 20 km in 2014. Also in 2015 at the Universiade in Gwangju , South Korea , he was victorious over 20 km. He participated in three world championships, 2013 in Moscow , 2015 in Beijing and 2017 in London . He finished eleventh in Moscow, eighth in Beijing and sixth in London in a personal best of 1:19:28 hours. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the bronze medal behind the two in 1:19:37 hours over 20 km Chinese Wang Zhen and Cai Zelin . In 2018 he won the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 1:19:34 hours.

His father David Smith was also active as a walker and took part in the Olympic Games twice.
