route

The start and finish point of the route was on the "The Mail" road connecting Trafalgar Studios and Buckingham Palace on the corner of "Marlborough Road" near Marlborough House . Constantly on this route I passed St. James' Park to the south-west . Initially, the route headed northeast past the Trafalgar Studios. The path circled the statue "Equestrian Statue of Charles I" behind it on a roundabout and led back to the southwest on the almost dead straight street "The Mail". It went past the start and finish point to Buckingham Palace, where the Victoria Memorial was completely circled. So the route led back on the street "The Mail" to the start and finish point. The length of this route was two kilometers, so it had to be completed 25 times when walking 50 km .

initial situation

Seven walkers faced this competition, which was held for the first time for women at a major championship. This is a small number of participants given a world championship, the discipline must certainly grow in the women's area and still has a lot of catching up to do. So there was no date specifically set for women, but walkers set out on the route together.

Course of competition

August 13, 2017, 7:45 a.m. local time (8:45 a.m. CEST )

Right from the start, the Chinese Yin Hang and the Portuguese Inês Henriques formed a top duo that set a high pace. A group of three went behind them. The Brazilian Nair Da Rosa, the Chinese Yang Shuqing and the American Kathleen Burnett were almost a minute and a half behind after just five kilometers. Behind them followed with Erin Taylor-Talcott - almost two minutes behind - and Susan Randall, whose gap to the top was already about three minutes, two other Americans. Yin and Henriques stayed together until shortly before thirty kilometers and continued to increase their lead. Their pace remained high, in the course of the competition it was even a little faster than in the initial phase. In the second group, da Rosa had to tear off after fifteen kilometers, but Young and Burnett stayed together longer. After 25 kilometers, Burnett lost contact with Yin.

At thirty kilometers, Henriques had pulled away from Yin and continued to expand her lead over the Chinese. Yin stayed in second place with an increasing gap to the closest walkers. Behind it, Yang initially looked like the sure bronze medal candidate. At 35 km she was 50 seconds ahead of Burnett. But the American caught up again. With five kilometers to go, Burnett was only five seconds behind Yang. Taylor-Talcott was already disqualified after three red cards. Da Rosa and Randall, however, were still in the running. The Brazilian was more than twenty minutes behind the leader, the American even more than forty minutes. Both walkers then gave up the competition in the final section.

Inês Henriques went through the finish line unchallenged as the new world champion and set a new world record . With a new Asian record, Yin Hang won the silver medal a good two minutes behind the Portuguese. Yin's lead over third Yang Shuqing was just under twelve minutes. Kathleen Burnett couldn't get close to her Chinese opponent and was a little more than a minute behind the bronze place in fourth place. Their time meant a new American record.
