Henriques took part in the Junior World Championships in 1996 and 1998, but did not reach any place among the top 20 walkers. At the 2004 Olympic Games , she finished 25th in the 20 km walk . After a twelfth place at the European Championships in 2006 , she achieved seventh place at the 2007 World Championships, the best placement of her career on the 20 km route. This was followed by a tenth place at the World Championships in 2009 and a ninth place in 2011 , with eighth place in between at the European Championships in 2010 . At the 2012 Olympic Games , she was ranked 15th on the list of results. She was eleventh at the 2013 World Championships and twelfth at the 2016 Olympic Games . In 2009, 2011 and 2016 she was the Portuguese national champion over 20 km.
In 2016, the World Athletics Federation ( IAAF) decided to include women’s 50 km walk in its official program from 2017 . In January 2017 Inês Henriques set the first world record over this route. At the 2017 world championships , the 50 km competition was held for the first time at world championships, with seven athletes competing. Of these, four walkers reached the goal, Inês Henriques improved her world record from 4:08:26 to 4:05:56. At the European Championships in Berlin 2018 , she won the title in 4:09:21 h and was also the first female European champion in this discipline.
