Rio Maior is a municipality and city in Portugal . The community had 21,192 inhabitants on June 30, 2011, of which 12,005 live within the city.

history

Rio Maior was first mentioned as a town in the Santarém district in 1177 when shares in the Salinas da Fonte da Bica were sold to the Knights Templar . In 1619 a royal inn was opened here. The royal road from Lisbon to Coimbra , opened in 1789 , also passed Rio Maior. In the liberal wars stayed in 1834 King Michael I in the hostel. In 1836 Rio Maior became the seat of its own circle.

After initial attempts in 1890 , coal mining was resumed and intensified here as part of the country's efforts in the First World War . On August 14, 1985 , the previous small town ( Vila ) Rio Maior was elevated to a city ( Cidade ).
