Entroncamento is a city in Portugal and the administrative seat of the district of the same name. It is located in the Santarém district and has a population of 20,065 (2004).

history

Entroncamento (literally: branching) was created in 1864 by a railway junction on the Lisbon – Porto lines ( Linha do Norte ) and the Linha do Leste , which runs from Abrantes to Spain . The railway town belonged to Vila Nova da Barquinha from August 24, 1926 to 1945 , but became an independent municipality and a small town on November 26, 1945 . On June 20, 1991, Entroncamento was made a city .

Railway junction

Entroncamento is not only home to the only marshalling yard and the central repair shop in Portugal, but also the National Railway Museum, the Museu National Ferroviário . It was founded on February 17, 2005. The new engine shed was inaugurated on June 20, 2008. It stands on the site of a structure from the 1960s that was demolished in 1976. The museum is open every day except Mondays (2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., guided tours in Portuguese on the hour).
