In the 19th century, the physic nut was also grown on a large scale on Fogo, the seeds of which were used to produce machine oil . All over Fogo you can still see the now overgrown bushes. Recently, the plant has again attracted the interest of science as a possible producer of biodiesel .

  • Not far southwest of the city is the main attraction of the entire island of Fogo, the Pico do Fogo volcano , which last erupted in 2014. With a height of 2829 m, it is the highest mountain in Cape Verde. After the eruption in 1995, the town of Chã das Caldeiras , which is well worth a visit, was built at its foot, where wine is grown on an area of over 200 ha. Over 100 winegrowers are united in a cooperative that successfully markets the wine. Many buildings in Chã das Caldeiras are made of black lava stone, even the main street is paved with lava blocks.
