São Filipe is the central place of the municipality of the same name on the Cape Verde island of Fogo and in 2006 had about 7600 inhabitants. The place is embedded in a barren, steppe-like landscape in the southwest of the island. For Fogo it represents the connection to the outside world through the airfield 3 km away in the east of the city and the port Vale dos Cavaleiros in the north.

history

São Filipe was founded in the 16th century and is now considered the second oldest town in the entire country after Cidade Velha , although the city rights were not granted until 1922. In 1655 the municipality was destroyed by Flemish pirates .

Attractions

  • The historic city center, the Bila Baxo, is of particular importance. It is located on a plateau about 40 m above the Atlantic Ocean and is bordered by a black sand beach in the west. This district is characterized by an extensive ensemble of townhouses in the Portuguese colonial style, the Sobrados . Some have ornate facades, shady courtyards and representative balconies. Many of them are still on the verge of decay, but since 2000 more and more have been acquired by private individuals and lovingly restored. The city administration also endeavors to preserve this cultural heritage that is unique to Cabo Verde. São Filipe has been proposed for the UNESCO World Heritage List . In the Bila Baxo you will also find the central market and many shops, countless craft shops, pubs, several restaurants and pensions in the city.
  • One of the most striking buildings in the city is the town hall ( Camara Municipal ), completed in 1928, with its representative flight of stairs, which is located on a small green area with a music pavilion.
  • The main Catholic church Nossa Senhora da Conceição with its two bell towers was built towards the end of the 19th century and renovated several times. The last renovation was completed in 2007. The square on which it is located is flanked by several mansions from the 18th century.
  • The Casa da Memória museum on Praça 12 de Setembro , lined with historic houses, is housed in an old trading house from 1820. In the courtyard were endemic plants of the island of Fogo - such. B. Crabo bravo ( Erysimum caboverdiana ) and Língua de vaca ( Echium vulcanorum ) - planted, the z. T. are threatened with extinction. In addition, a traditional lava stone dwelling was built true to the original in the style that was once widespread on Fogo. Part of the courtyard is paved with natural stone made of basalt .
  • Immediately on the cliff above the black beach Praia da Bila in the northwest of the old town is the Praça Serpa Pinto with several mansions in colonial style, monuments and a small green area. In its northern part is the Miradouro da Bila Baxo viewpoint , which offers a beautiful view of the beach and the neighboring island of Brava , especially in the evening .
  • In the south of the old town part of the Fortim Carlota fortress built in 1667 has been preserved. The building, in front of which an old cannon can still be seen, served as a prison until 2005 and is currently not in use.
  • South of the old town, the old Antigo Cemitério cemetery with graves from the 19th century is well worth seeing, some of them unmistakably show the classical style. Funerals were held here until the 1990s.
  • Outside the old town, the small, square Praça Alberto da Silva with its well-tended green spaces and a small chapel is worth a visit. The place rarely visited by tourists, where u. a. An internet café is located on a hill and offers a beautiful view of part of the city and its surroundings.

Churches

Aside from the main church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which is visible from afar, and the equally remarkable chapel on Praça Alberto da Silva, there is a New Apostolic Church and two parishes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the city .

beaches

The old town extends in the west to a 40 m high cliff, in front of which the black, elongated sandy beach of Praia da Bila is located. On some days there is a beautiful view of the neighboring island of Brava from here, especially in the evening. However, the beach is hardly suitable for bathing in the sea, as it is not too clean and the sea is rough on many days.

The beach at Porto de Vale de Cavaleiros , the port located around 4 km north of the city, is more suitable for a swim in the sea . Locals also bathe here, because the sea is calmer and the water is cleaner, despite the close proximity of the port. The most popular beach with locals and tourists is Ponta da Salina near São Jorge .
