history
Ribeira Grande (Portuguese: great valley ) was built by Antonio da Noli as the first settlement on the Cape Verde Islands in 1462. It was also the first permanent European settlement in the tropics. Settlers were recruited from Madeira Island . In 1466 the settlement received the royal monopoly on the slave trade and quickly gained in importance. Slaves from Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone were shipped from here to Brazil and the Caribbean . The great valley of Ribeira Grande served as a natural prison. In the church the slaves were baptized and thus obtained higher prices.
In 1532 the place became a bishopric and in 1572 it was given the title of city ( Portuguese Cidade ). Vasco da Gama (1497) and Christoph Columbus (1498) landed here on their voyages of discovery. In 1585 and 1586, Sir Francis Drake raided the city twice.
The great importance of Ribeira Grande in the 17th century as a supply port for the Portuguese Indian fleets , as well as the fleets to Brazil and as the center of the Portuguese slave trade was ended in 1712 by the French Jacques Cassart , who plundered and destroyed the city.
Today Cidade Velha is a small fishing village, the former valley of the slaves is used for agriculture (sugar cane, coconuts, mangoes).
