The Linha do Leste is a railway line in Portugal that ends in Badajoz , Spain .

Class 0350 railcars in Badajoz train station in Spain (2009)

The Linha do Leste connects Abrantes on the Linha da Beira Baixa with the border station of Elvas in the Alentejo . The route has a total length of 146.2 km. After Elvas station, the railway line crosses the border to Spain near Badajoz .

As of January 1, 2012, the CP stopped all passenger traffic on the route due to austerity measures by the Passos Coelho government ; an average of 17 passengers per train are said to have traveled the route. Since September 2015 there has been a train connection in both directions between Portalegre and Entroncamento on Fridays and Sundays - at the Entroncamento junction there is a connection to Intercidades connections to Lisbon and Porto. The agreement came about at the initiative of the City of Portalegre, the Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre and the GNR training center. The infrastructure operator Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) waived the otherwise usual train path fee .

After the parliamentary elections in autumn 2015 and the associated change of political majority, the parliament decided at the request of the Greens ( Os Verdes ) - with the support of the former governing parties PSD and CDS , which had previously shut down the line - to reintroduce train services to Elvas / Badajoz . According to a parliamentary resolution, the IP must continue to waive the train path fees. Class 350 railcars will be used.

As of August 29, 2017 there will be a daily passenger train in both directions between Entroncamento and Badajoz.

The route remained open for goods between 2012 and 2017.
