Ponte de Sor (also Ponte de Sôr ) is a city ( Cidade ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 16,722 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. The place was first mentioned in writing as a station on the Roman road passing here , the third military road from Emerita Augusta (today Mérida ) to Olisipo (today Lisbon ). A new construction of the Roman bridge over the Sor River, built in the 19th century, can be seen, and a milestone of the Roman road has also been preserved. The Roman bridge gave the place its name (from Ponte = bridge). Not much is known about the place during the Arab Empire of al-Andalus . Presumably, the present place was repopulated during the Reconquista when the area came to the Knights Templar .

Ponte de Sor received its first town charter in 1199 , according to other sources as early as 1161 , which King Manuel I renewed in the course of his administrative reforms in 1514 .

The previous small town ( Vila ) Ponte de Sor was elevated to a city (Cidade) in 1985 .

With the river bath on the extended river promenade Zona Ribeirinha, Ponte de Sor has another natural bathing facility, which also has an outdoor stage, tennis courts and various other sports facilities.

The Eléctrico Futebol Clube, founded in 1929, is considered the most important sports club in the area . His first football team plays in Serie E of the fourth Portuguese league ( IIIª Divisão ) (as of 2012/2013) and plays home games in the municipal Estádio Municipal de Ponte de Sor . The club also has futsal , basketball, swimming, judo and dance departments that are located in the city's sports facilities. These include two sports hall complexes, an indoor sports pool and an outdoor pool, tennis courts, a skate park and other things.
