Avis is a small town ( Vila ) with 1840 (as of June 30, 2011) , and a district ( Concelho ) with 4571 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) in Portugal . The place is known for the Knightly Order of Avis and the second Portuguese royal dynasty, the House of Avis . It is also a well-known stronghold of the Portuguese Communist Party .
history
Neolithic tombs ( port .: Antas ) and other finds prove that the area was settled in prehistoric times . Little concrete is known about the origins of today's location. According to a widespread but unsubstantiated theory, two knights of the later order of the Avis, Fernando Rodrigues Monteiro and an unknown, are said to have looked for a suitable place to found a place here on behalf of King D.Afonso II . They saw a suitable hill not far from Vaiamonte . When an eagle rose from a nest from the trees standing there, they interpreted this as a good sign. The current place name should refer to the Latin word Avis for bird, which should have been chosen as the place name in the absence of other local reference points. Frei Bernardo de Brito supports this thesis in his Cistercian chronicles (Port. Crónica de Cister , fifth book).
King D.Afonso II gave the area to Fernão Anes, the Grand Master of the Knightly Order of Avis , in 1211 with the condition that the place be settled and fortified. After fulfilling the conditions, the order of Évora moved here in 1223 and has since used the place name in its designation. In the same year Avis received its first city rights.
The illegitimate son of King D.Pedro I , João (German: Johann), became Grand Master of the Order of Avi at the endeavors of his father. When Portugal threatened to fall to Castile through succession in 1383 , João took the lead in the revolution of 1383 . War broke out with Castile, which was decisively defeated in 1385 in the Battle of Aljubarrota by the outnumbered Portuguese army under João and the talented Nuno Álvares Pereira . João became King of Portugal as D. João I. and founder of the country's second ruling dynasty, the House of Avis .
King Manuel I renewed the town charter in 1512 as part of his administrative reforms.
The Avis district is considered to be the “most communist ” in the whole country. After the fall of the Estado Novo regime with the 1974 Carnation Revolution , there were profound changes in the country, and particularly in the Alentejo region where Avis is located. As a result, the communist PCP has won every election here since 1976 .
Culture and sights
The monuments of the place include a number of historical public and private buildings, stone fountains, gardens, the medieval castle Castelo de Avis , and a number of sacred buildings , including the monastery Mosteiro de São Bento de Avis . In parts of the originally Gothic monastery complex, Mosteiro de São Bento de Avis , which after reconstruction shows Renaissance and Baroque features, is today u. a. the municipal museum ( Museu Municipal ), the city archives ( Arquivo Municipal ) and the city library ( Biblioteca Municipal ). Art exhibitions and shows of traditional handicrafts from the region also take place here.
The stake (port .: Pelourinho ) from the 16th century shows an eagle at its tip, as part of the foundation theory of the place.
The historic town center is also a listed building.
During construction work in the center of the city in 2004, near the main church and the Largo Dr. Sérgio de Castro human bones that suggest an ancient or prehistoric cemetery. An archaeological excavation site has been set up here.
Avis is not far from the Barragem do Maranhão reservoir , which offers a wide range of water sports and swimming opportunities. With the Complexo do Clube Náutico there is a complex of, among other things, a campsite, swimming facilities, riding tours, mountain bike tours, hiking trails, tennis courts and other sports facilities. In particular, a wide variety of water sports are practiced here, from rowing to windsurfing to kite surfing . Portuguese and international competitive athletes are more frequent guests here in training camps, including various Scandinavian Olympic rowing teams or the London Rowing Center.
