View of Castelo de Vide

Castelo de Vide is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in the Portalegre district in Portugal with 3407 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It belongs to the Rede de Judiarias , a route of places with historical Jewish communities in Portugal.

history

Finds prove a settlement since the Neolithic . In the course of the Reconquista and the threats from its Spanish neighbors, the place gained strategic importance. The place previously called Vide or Vila de Vide was renamed Castelo de Vide after his castle was built . It belonged to Marvão until 1276 and has been an independent circle since then. In 1310 the place received city rights ( Foral ) from King D Dinis . In the course of the 14th century, the place grew beyond its walls and, especially since the end of the 15th century, experienced a notable boom due to wool processing. A significant Jewish community lived here.

In 1512 King Manuel I renewed the town charter . In the years 1704 to 1708 the place suffered destruction by Spanish troops.

Attractions

In the circle there are a large number of antas and sacred buildings under monument protection, as well as Roman excavations, various mansions , fountains and historical public buildings. The historic town center is also a listed building as a whole. A few kilometers outside of the city is the archaeological park Parque megalítico dos Coureleiros .
