The Parque megalítico dos Coureleiros is an archaeological park in Santiago Maior in the Portalegre district , North Alentejo in Portugal with megalithic systems from the Neolithic . It is located on the road from Castelo de Vide to Portalegre or Alpalhão .

location

In the park there are five Antas relatively close together, which together with the Antas da Coutada de Alcogulo represent one of the two large groups of sepulchral monuments in the Castelo de Vide district. Of the five antas, three still exist; two more are cataloged, but already badly disturbed.

Four Antas lie north of a railway line on either side of a gravel road that leads to a large granite quarry ; a fifth fragmentary is located to the north on a hill. The construction of the railway line severely damaged the Antas. New excavations were carried out in the early 1990s.

Finds and Findings

  • There are only remnants of Anta 1, a small polygonal complex. During the follow-up examinations, five intact slate idols were found here .
  • Anta 2 (to the right of the path), picturesquely surmounted by an oak , is a large polygonal complex, the capstone of which has fallen diagonally into the chamber. Only one bearing stone has survived from the corridor ; the tracks of the others could still be determined. After that, the corridor was more than six meters long. The finds revealed broken-walled vessels , a stone ax , a broken ax, several arrowheads , blades and pearls . In 1910, Anta 2 was classified as a Monumento Nacional (National Monument), while the other Antas were declared as Imóveis de Interest Público (Building of Public Interest) since 1997 .
  • Anta 3 is a small polygonal complex with a chamber with seven bearing stones and a narrow passage over two meters long. In 1945 excavations were carried out during which four stone axes, four blades, a granite millstone with a rubbing stone were found. The re-excavation yielded a further ten stone axes, a hammer, rock crystals and trapezoidal blades.
  • Anta 4 was also a large system. It is on the left in the curve to the quarry and was used as a pigsty in the 1940s. The passage was only exposed after the new excavations. They produced broken pottery, arrowheads, blades, four slabs of slate , a fragment of one, and pearls.
